Tar Sands in the Congo: Return to Tarmaggedon

Alternative title: "Be Very Afraid: Tar Sands Found in the Congo"

I would like to write on the prospects of tar sands development in the Congo (not the DRC, but the Congo). Recently, ENI, an Italian energy firm has started exploration and signed an agreement with the Congolese government to “mine” the tar sands. This would be aided by a natural gas well they already have in the area. Obviously, the implications would be dire. I want to describe the current state of the proposal, describe some potential impacts, though much is unknown at this time. The link would be made with the tar sands in Canada, and imply how much more likely the ecosystems and communities of the Congo are to be devastated by this development. This would include quotes and information direct from Congolese activists who I recently had the chance to debrief in Italy for a pre-G8 meeting. There will also be a brief bit about organizing happening and planned around these Tar Sands. It should be stressed that this subject is pretty much undocumented to this moment.
